Say So Long to Summer in the Windy City

August always signals the unofficial wind down of summer but that doesn’t mean there’s a shortage of things to do in the great Windy City. If you’re looking for one last hurrah of the season, Chicago is the perfect destination. Embrace the last days of summer and immerse yourself in the city’s culture, nature and events. From Lake Michigan to music festivals to sporting events, there’s something for everyone.

Family Fun at Navy Pier

You won’t want to miss an opportunity to ride the infamous Centennial Wheel that soars nearly 200 feet at Navy Pier overlooking Chicago and Lake Michigan. Enjoy various other rides, food and shows throughout August including fireworks every Wednesday and Saturday evening. It’s summer fun the whole family will enjoy.

Explore Millennium Park

During August there are numerous free concerts, film screenings and cultural events happening at Millennium Park. While you’re there you’ll want to be sure to snap a selfie in front of the iconic Cloud Gate sculpture aka The “Bean”. If you just want a spot to relax, layout a blanket on the lawn and relish in the summer sun.

Root for the Cubbies

A trip to Wrigley Field is a must if you’re a baseball fan…or even if you’re not. The energy and excitement at a Cubs game is unmatched, so hop on the CTA and head north to the friendly confines to “root, root, root for the Cubbies!” After the game there is no shortage of restaurants and bars to continue the celebration.

Events

If you're a music fanatic, the iconic Lollapalooza takes place in Grant Park in early August. With a top-tier line-up each year, it's a show that will keep you dancing, signing and reliving after it ends. Looking for an aerial experience instead? The Chicago Air and Water Show takes place mid-August where you can catch stunning displays by the U.S. Navy Blue Angels and other pilots performing over Lake Michigan.
