Celebrating Pride in Hollywood
Each June during Pride Month, LGBTQ+ communities and supporters come together and honor the courageous people who stood up to fight for equality and celebrate the freedom to be themselves. Pride celebrations take place all over the world, but did you know that one of the most popular Pride Month traditions has roots in Hollywood?
Making History in Hollywood
On June 28, 1970, approximately 2,000 people gathered on McCadden Place in Hollywood and marched north to Hollywood Boulevard, in what became the first permitted gay Pride parade in the world. The parade was organized by Christopher Street West, a 501 (c)3 non-profit organization, in response to and in commemoration of the Stonewall Rebellion on Christopher Street in New York City that took place one year prior. This same parade is now known as the LA Pride Parade and attracts more than 145,000 spectators each year. More than 50 years later, this tradition continues around the globe with a Pride parade in almost every major metropolis.
